Last weekend, I guided a group of guests from Oman on an enchanting safari through Mikumi National Park, a trip that was particularly special for me. While I usually don’t accompany my safari groups anymore, as we have a well-trained ground team in place, I decided to join this expedition because one of the guests was a 78-year-old lady who faced challenges with mobility. I wanted to ensure her safety and comfort throughout the experience, ready to assist in case of any emergencies.

Nestled within Tanzania’s lesser-trodden southern circuit, Mikumi National Park offers a serene yet vibrant wilderness escape, and I was eager to help my guests experience its wonders. Though the park isn’t as famous as Serengeti or Ngorongoro, it provides a tranquil environment where we can appreciate the rich diversity of the Tanzanian savanna and its wildlife.

During our journey, we took a break to enjoy a picnic lunch in a scenic area surrounded by majestic baobab trees. These ancient giants created a perfect atmosphere for a peaceful meal, blending beautifully with the raw charm of the African wilderness. Shortly after lunch, a quick rain shower swept through the area. The rain refreshed the surroundings, settling the dust and leaving the ground perfect for our relaxing afternoon game drive. The cooler weather brought a special energy to the park, with animals emerging into the open.

Aboard open-sided safari vehicles, we journeyed through expansive grasslands teeming with life. Zebras playfully darted across our path, and graceful giraffes stretched to nibble on acacia trees. Herds of wildebeest were scattered across the horizon, while imposing elephants meandered majestically through the underbrush. The highlight was a gorgeous lioness lounging in the shade, and along the waterways, we spotted mud-crusted hippos and sunbathing crocodiles. Several families of ever-curious warthogs wandered nearby, with elegant gazelles and impalas bounding effortlessly through the grass, and an elusive reed buck crossing our gaze. Each encounter enriched our journey, making our day in Mikumi a truly vibrant experience with nature at its most captivating.
