Uru Bracelet with Raw Tanzanite & Sterling Silver

Uru Bracelet with Raw Tanzanite & Sterling Silver

Uru comes from an ancient Swahili word that means “an essence" - the mystical attribute which fuels the age-old belief that gemstones bring to the wearer strength, prosperity, and respect.

The Tanzanian uru bracelet is made of sterling silver, rough gemstone, and hand-molded metal bangle wrapped in knotted fishing line. Every uru bracelet uses about 40-60 meters of thread that is knotted by hand and it takes up to 5 (five) hours to make just one piece and no two bracelets are the same. The knotting technique used is similar to that practiced for centuries by dhow fishermen of the East African coast. The uru bracelet actually started as a hobby for a fisherman who made hand bands from fishing line and sold them on the highway. Fast forward to today and these handmade bands have been refined, and precious metal and stones are added to create fashion accessories that are both simple and high quality. The beauty in the pieces comes from the uncut nature of the various gemstones that the bands are fitted with. The gemstones are fitted into the pieces in their ‘rough’ state making them more affordable than pieces featuring cut polished stones. The gemstones are responsibly sourced from small scale miners and are  conflict-free. Uru bracelets are lovingly handcrafted by skilled artisans and tradesmen of Tanzania.
