  • Care for Sapphire Jewelry

Natural, untreated sapphires are hard, durable, and are not prone to chipping, cracking or breaking. Because of the hardness of sapphires, please take care that they do not scratch softer gemstones in your jewelry box. Natural, untreated sapphires are usually safe to clean in ultrasonic or steam cleaners used by jewelers. Exceptions include star sapphires or stones that are heavily fractured or included. The best way to clean your sapphire jewelry is with warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding soaking the stone. Always avoid harsh detergents, and never clean your jewelry with solvents such as alcohol, acetone or paint thinner.

  • Sapphire Mineral Information

Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September. They have been prized as great gemstones since 800BC and popular in ancient Roman, ancient Persia, and throughout the Middle Ages. When you think of sapphires, you probably think of a rich blue color, but sapphires actually come in almost every color of the rainbow—including pink, peach, orange, yellow, green, teal, and purple. Red sapphires are better known as rubies (both are varieties of the mineral corundum). The most valuable color of sapphire is a cornflower blue color. Another extremely valuable sapphire form is the very rare, orange-pink Padparadascha. An exotic type of sapphire, known as color-changing sapphire, displays a different color depending on its lighting — it is blue in natural light and violet in artificial light. Yellow, pink, teal, and parti sapphires have recently become very popular, and are now often seen in jewelry. Sapphires are among the most durable naturally occurring elements in the world with a hardness score of 9 out of 10 in the Mohs scale. The durability of sapphires makes them an excellent choice for engagement rings and other jewelry you plan to wear every day.
